3 Steps to a Perfect Picnic

A picnic is basically an outdoor meal; usually served in a pleasing to the eye location on a blanket or if your posh, a picnic table. As a nation we love picnics, a little bit of blue sky and a few rays of rare to find sunshine and we are really up for an adventure.

Following this three steps below will help you achieve a perfect picnic experience.

A picnic is basically an outdoor meal; usually served in a pleasing to the eye location on a blanket or if your posh, a picnic table. As a nation we love picnics, a little bit of blue sky and a few rays of rare to find sunshine and we are really up for an adventure. Food

Food is one of the most important ingredients to a happy picnic. You can have the most beautiful scenery around you and a bunch of your best mates but once hunger sets in and the food isn’t up to scratch you will have a small disaster on your hands.

When planning picnic food think portability and ease of consumption. Sandwiches are always a safe choice, so are the various salads you can pick up but what about something more sophisticated? What about a quiche, tasty pie or a sausage roll? All of those can be cooked in advance or simply picked up from your local super store. Higgidy offers all of them and they are suitable to be eaten both cold and warm, so you don’t even have to worry about cooking them beforehand.

As a nation we love picnics, a little bit of blue sky and a few rays of rare to find sunshine and we are really up for an adventure. In addition to your main meal, pack some fruit, maybe a bag of crisp or pretzels and don’t forget about drinks too.

Location

Once you food is all sorted out, it’s time to pick the location. Somewhere pretty with easy access and enough space for everyone to chill in comfort. Also be considerate about the local neighbourhood. If you are planning a trip out with a large number of friends or family then think about the noise you will make when the conversation becomes animated and make sure you aren’t going to disturb anyone around you.

It’s pretty obvious that you will only invite people you like, love, care about or people who just make you feel good in their company but there is something else to consider… Your companions need to be in the right state of mind. There is nothing worse than trying to have a relaxing picnic when one of your friends can’t stand sitting on the ground or is scared of the ants living nearby. Think about things like if Mr/Miss Somebody (who has severe allergies) now, will they be happy to spend a few hours on a meadow or would you be better in the middle of the local woodlands. These are small things but if not considered they can ruin the entire day. Get it right and you are one step closer to that perfect picnic.

We personally like to picnic in our local fields, there is a nice spot between two fields, just next to a small stream; it’s always so peaceful and quiet.

#EverydayWins with Bosch – Pet Hairs? What Hairs?

Shedding pets means hairs everywhere; those hairs are one of the biggest nightmares of any pet owner… but what if you could make your life easier? What about a vacuum cleaner which is always ready, small, light and super portable but at the same time offers great performance and actually “sucks” all those undesired hairs up? Would that make a difference?

Shedding pets means hairs everywhere; those hairs are one of the biggest nightmares of any pet owner… but what if you could make your life easier? What about a vacuum cleaner which is always ready, small, light and super portable but at the same time offers great performance and actually “sucks” all those undesired hairs up? Would that make a difference?Well, it can really make the difference, trust me.

Until my experience with the Bosch ProAnimal Athlet vacuuming was a big chore, one which required preparation, time and a lot of effort. Retrieve the vacuum (neatly hidden away), find the empty plug (this always is a problem in our house as it seems that we are using most of the plugs at all times), vacuum, change the plug, vacuum, change the plug, carry the monster upstairs and repeat the process. So many times I had the need for a vacuum but I simply couldn’t be bothered to get it out so instead I would resort to a pan and brush… silly I know, as it really doesn’t work very well with hairs.

Bosch Athlet is different.

It quietly stands in the corner of my pantry waiting to be summoned. The vacuum is fairly small and very light but despite this its freestanding performance is top notch. It doesn’t require leaning against anything and it can be stored almost everywhere. It’s light, at just 3kg it really isn’t a big deal to get it out, lift or carry around. There is no need to hunt for a free plug. Changing it over from floor standing to a handheld machine takes only a few seconds (once you get used to it, that is). I can be vacuuming what needs cleaning within seconds, no matter what or where I vacuum as the suction stays the same no matter the type of surface… no fuss, no hassle.

SensorBagless technology will notify me when there is something impacting the performance of the airflow of the vacuum cleaner or when the filter needs changing. Don’t worry there is no need to buy any spare filters as they are simply washable and when one is being washed you can still use the vacuum cleaner with the alternative filter provided. Easy!

Would that make a difference?Charge light will let me know when it is time to recharge the battery (which isn’t happening so often as the vacuum can run for up to 75min without recharge)… see… just like I said… no fuss whatsoever.

Sounds good, doesn’t it?

And now for something special.

I am in the possession of one Bosch ProAnimal Athlet vacuum which is looking for a new owner. In a few weeks’ time one of you, my lovely readers, will be a proud owner of this outstanding vacuum. To be in with a chance of winning a Bosch ProAnimal Athlet please tell me:

Kitchen Essentials – Chopping Boards

A chopping board is a must have in any kitchen but with such a huge choice of the different types and styles of board on the market it’s hard to pick the one for us. Wooden, bamboo, glass or plastic they all have their positive and negative sides… so which one to choose?

Kitchen Essentials – Chopping Boards. An easy guide to buying the perfect chopping board. A chopping board is a must have in any kitchen but with such a huge choice of the different types and styles of board on the market it’s hard to pick the one for us. Wooden, bamboo, glass or plastic they all have their positive and negative sides… so which one to choose? A few months back when we were in the midst of KonMari-ing our kitchen and in that process we had gotten rid of all our chopping boards. However, it didn’t take us long to realised the mistake of our actions… so off to the garage we went to retrieve some from the charity pile. Since that day I have been looking for a suitably perfect chopping board, talking to friends, asking strangers (especially in the Facebook KonMari group as most people there would also have the same problem at some point) but it seemed the more I researched the subject, the more confused I became. There was no right and wrong answer. Different chopping boards will suit different people and different needs. I made a list of the pros and cons before hitting the shopping mall in search of my favourite board.

Butchers Block

Pro: can last a lifetime

Cons: price, weight

A good quality butcher’s block, when taken care of, can last a lifetime. They are pricy and heavy but they are a must have for some jobs in the kitchen. Their thickness and size means there is no movement when “playing” with large chunks of meat. Defiantly a must buy for any meat lover who shops at the local butcher more than at the supermarket.

Wooden Boards

Pro: long lasting, kind for knifes

Cons: care regime

The wooden board is just the thinner “brother” of a butcher block. They are much cheaper and lighter but their essential care regime is something off putting. You can’t just pop them into the dishwasher so they have to be cleaned by hand in a specific way in order to preserve their properties.

Bamboo Boards

Pro: hygienic, price

Cons: unkind for knifes

Bamboo boards present the most eco-friendly choice out there. They are lightweight and usually cheaper than wooden boards but… well there is always a “but”… bamboo is strong and lacks any grain so in the long run your knives will suffer.

Plastic Boards

Thick Ones

Pro: price

Cons: weight

Thick plastic boards could be perfect but due to their light weight they are kind of unstable, which can result in slipping which can potentially lead to injuries. Most of them lack any kind of anti-slipping properties or countermeasures. The good thing about them is that they can be washed in the dishwasher as often as your heart desires and will withstand the harsher chemicals during the cleaning process.

Thin so called chopping mats

Pro: price, weight, portable

Cons: very consumable

I personally like chopping mats but they require frequent replacement. Due to their thickness or should I say the lack of it, they are getting scratched (read chopped) quickly and thus lose their charm within days of use. Washing them in a dishwasher will most likely warp them due to the high heat levels so hand washing it is.

Glass Boards

Pro: easiest to clean, hygienic,

Cons: unkind for knifes

Glass chopping boards are the most hygienic option out there. They are super easy to clean, lightweight yet usually with anti-slip properties (most glass boards I have encountered have small rubber feet which help them stay in one spot), heat resistant and super durable but…. they will damage your knives in the long run, there is no question about it!

So here are all thoughts on the various styles of board and my pros and cons for them all. After my research session had finished we settled on: a butcher block, a set of thick plastic colour coordinated boards and one glass board. They are all bringing joy so they will stay in the kitchen 🙂

And now for a little surprise.

They’ll Love Gifts, a company which specialise in unique and personalised gifts, will provide a personalised glass chopping board to one of my Bark Time readers. You will be able to pick the design and customise it to your own requirements. To be in with a chance of winning one of these personalised glass chopping boards just follow the instructions on the Gleam app below.

Good Luck!
