Kitchen Essentials – Chopping Boards

A chopping board is a must have in any kitchen but with such a huge choice of the different types and styles of board on the market it’s hard to pick the one for us. Wooden, bamboo, glass or plastic they all have their positive and negative sides… so which one to choose?

Kitchen Essentials – Chopping Boards. An easy guide to buying the perfect chopping board. A chopping board is a must have in any kitchen but with such a huge choice of the different types and styles of board on the market it’s hard to pick the one for us. Wooden, bamboo, glass or plastic they all have their positive and negative sides… so which one to choose? A few months back when we were in the midst of KonMari-ing our kitchen and in that process we had gotten rid of all our chopping boards. However, it didn’t take us long to realised the mistake of our actions… so off to the garage we went to retrieve some from the charity pile. Since that day I have been looking for a suitably perfect chopping board, talking to friends, asking strangers (especially in the Facebook KonMari group as most people there would also have the same problem at some point) but it seemed the more I researched the subject, the more confused I became. There was no right and wrong answer. Different chopping boards will suit different people and different needs. I made a list of the pros and cons before hitting the shopping mall in search of my favourite board.

Butchers Block

Pro: can last a lifetime

Cons: price, weight

A good quality butcher’s block, when taken care of, can last a lifetime. They are pricy and heavy but they are a must have for some jobs in the kitchen. Their thickness and size means there is no movement when “playing” with large chunks of meat. Defiantly a must buy for any meat lover who shops at the local butcher more than at the supermarket.

Wooden Boards

Pro: long lasting, kind for knifes

Cons: care regime

The wooden board is just the thinner “brother” of a butcher block. They are much cheaper and lighter but their essential care regime is something off putting. You can’t just pop them into the dishwasher so they have to be cleaned by hand in a specific way in order to preserve their properties.

Bamboo Boards

Pro: hygienic, price

Cons: unkind for knifes

Bamboo boards present the most eco-friendly choice out there. They are lightweight and usually cheaper than wooden boards but… well there is always a “but”… bamboo is strong and lacks any grain so in the long run your knives will suffer.

Plastic Boards

Thick Ones

Pro: price

Cons: weight

Thick plastic boards could be perfect but due to their light weight they are kind of unstable, which can result in slipping which can potentially lead to injuries. Most of them lack any kind of anti-slipping properties or countermeasures. The good thing about them is that they can be washed in the dishwasher as often as your heart desires and will withstand the harsher chemicals during the cleaning process.

Thin so called chopping mats

Pro: price, weight, portable

Cons: very consumable

I personally like chopping mats but they require frequent replacement. Due to their thickness or should I say the lack of it, they are getting scratched (read chopped) quickly and thus lose their charm within days of use. Washing them in a dishwasher will most likely warp them due to the high heat levels so hand washing it is.

Glass Boards

Pro: easiest to clean, hygienic,

Cons: unkind for knifes

Glass chopping boards are the most hygienic option out there. They are super easy to clean, lightweight yet usually with anti-slip properties (most glass boards I have encountered have small rubber feet which help them stay in one spot), heat resistant and super durable but…. they will damage your knives in the long run, there is no question about it!

So here are all thoughts on the various styles of board and my pros and cons for them all. After my research session had finished we settled on: a butcher block, a set of thick plastic colour coordinated boards and one glass board. They are all bringing joy so they will stay in the kitchen 🙂

And now for a little surprise.

They’ll Love Gifts, a company which specialise in unique and personalised gifts, will provide a personalised glass chopping board to one of my Bark Time readers. Online Bargain Hunt + #Win £150 Tesco Gift Card

I am sure everyone loves a good bargain. Why wouldn’t we? We get what we want and there is still money left over in our wallets and purses. A trip to a shopping mall can be fun but let’s face it, most of the time there are 100s of other shoppers, queues and the deals aren’t as good as the ones online. I totally understand the fact that shops having to pay their rent and their overheads are facing much higher costs, but how much higher? Come on, the difference in prices for some items is simply off putting.

Online Bargain Hunt + Win £150 Tesco Gift CardI am a huge fan of online shopping. It’s convenient, hassle free and much cheaper! Not only might you get a better price from the get go but you also save on petrol (as you don’t have to drive to the town), parking (as you don’t have to park your car) and most likely some lunch or snack as in the comfort of your home you aren’t going to smell those Belgian waffles cooking in the corner shop or that freshly brewed coffee in the café next door. To add to this, you can enjoy a selection of unique online discount codes which just aren’t available in any store.

There are quite a few different companies’ offering online deals and discounts, BargainFox is one of them. They offer discounts and special offers for all the best online shops that deliver to the UK; their coupon code selection is updated as soon as new deals are made available and if you wish you can set yourself up an alert for your favourite brand.

Let’s take Tesco as an example. Currently BargainFox has 6 deals for them. They vary from 50p off (for a Cadbury Fingers), to £3 off if you spend £12 on dairy items (which isn’t very hard if you are doing your weekly shop), to a staggering 50% off if you fancy a leg of lamb 🙂 Yes, these deals might not be to everyone’s liking but as they change all the time it is worth popping back and checking what’s new out there… after all this is what a bargain hunt is all about, isn’t it?

And if you fancy yourself £150 Tesco gift card, simply fill out the Gleam app below.

Good luck and happy hunting!

BarkBeats – Review & Giveaway

BarkBeats is a dog subscription box with a heart. They deliver to you a selection of toys, treats and accessories and then donate at least 10% of their profits to UK dog rescue homes and shelters. Wonderful, isn’t it?

BarkBeats – Review & GiveawaySo how does it work?

Well, you describe your dog, you pick a plan (if you want any, as you can simply order as you go), and you pay and wait for your order to arrive at your door step 🙂

The price varies depending on the plan you choose. A one off box cost £19.99 but if taken as a 6 months subscription the price drops to a much better £14 a month and the price drops an extra pound to £13 if you take it for a full 12 months. The plans renew automatically, but you may cancel it at any time.

Our Lilly was asked to test one of BarkBeats boxes. This is what we received:

1. BarkBeats – Review & GiveawayMoody Pet Humunga Stache

4. BarkBeats – Review & GiveawayKong Air Dog Ball

5. BarkBeats – Review & GiveawayBark & Sparks Croissant

3. BarkBeats – Review & GiveawaySoopa Natural Chews

2. BarkBeats – Review & GiveawayFeelwells Training Treats

Five products and they all proved useful. Both toys are super, even the humunga stache which I actually thought would be a gimmick type of toy was liked 🙂 As for the treats, well Lilly is a lab cross so she loves all food so yes, they went down a storm with her.

Talking specifically about the treats it is worth noting that the chews are 100% natural, these are low calorie dried sweet potato, I was actually planning on making some for my guys, and so I am pleased they liked them.

The training treats were also a healthy option with no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives and they are wheat and wheat gluten free, which meant that Bunk could have some too.

Having tried a few pet subscription boxes before, I actually really like BarkBeats. They put very nice quality products into their boxes and I think they are well worth the money.

Being on a healthy path myself I am moving on with my new found way of life and including my dogs. I am aiming to feed them raw and offer only natural treats, so they can be as happy and healthy as possible.

As to the toys, well I have actually covered this before in my Top 3 Toys for Large & Giant Dogs post… Kong is the way to go, so I was extremely happy to see a Kong toy included as I know it will serve both Lilly and Bunk well for a lot more than a 30 minutes play session.

Overall, a huge thumbs up (or a paws up) to BarkBeats box; nice products, good price and great customer service.

And if you would like to try a BarkBeats box for your dog, we have one to giveaway.

Just like always, simply follow the instructions on the Gleam app below and check for the winner announcement after the closing date.

‘What’s Cookin’ Reole – Cook Music Cook Food – Review & Giveaway

‘What’s Cookin’ Reole – Cook Music Cook Food – Review & Giveaway“If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold,
it would be a merrier world.”
J.R.R. Tolkien

Isn’t it true?

Everything seems to be better with a little bit of music and some good food!

So why not put these two desirables together?

Well, Reole have done just that.

Funkmaster general Reole is following up his dazzling album ‘Hear Come The Drums’ with an equally incredible offering ‘What’s Cookin.’ The album is a warm homely feeling album that is honest and not over spiced. The cooking music part is equally influenced by cooking food.

‘What’s Cookin’ is sure to set ears twitching and tummy’s rumbling everywhere with its blend of instrumental funk, jazz and classic rock. It’s an album with subtle touches and fantastic production.

The album contains 13 music tracks and 7 recipes including jambalaya fire, gris-gris jerk chicken with beans and coconut rice and some mean muffuletta to name but a few.

It’s a great addition for any eager cook. It would make a great little gift and I am sure it would put a smile on any cooks face.

What’s Cookin’ album is set for release on December 4th but I have two advanced copies to giveaway to a couple of my Bark Time readers… so if you fancy some new tunes to put you in the cooking mood just enter my giveaway below.
