We all deserve something special from time to time so why not treat our four legged friends to some yummy homemade treats? This recipe, for a change, is totally flourless. I don’t think that flour in small quantities is necessarily bad for our dogs but a few readers have suggested that they would prefer a flourless recipe, so here you have it… banana and peanut butter mixed with oats… quick, easy and actually rather tasty… yes, I do try all baked goods even the ones designed for my dogs.

As I cook / bake for my dogs, which are way above the so-called standard size and on top of that there are two of them, depending on your circumstances you might want to halve the ingredients… just to make sure your pooch doesn’t end up being over fed with treats as you become fearful of the treats going off. The ingredients as stated below will yield 24 6cm round 1cm deep treats, which are perfect for my large / giant breed but might be way too big for a smaller lap dog type of breed, so please adjust ingredient amounts accordingly.

Ingredients:

  • 350g organic oats
  • 200g ripe bananas flesh
  • 200g unsalted peanut butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2tsp cinnamon

Preheat the oven to 180C and prepare a large baking sheet.

In a large bowl place the bananas and mash them well with a fork.

Add the peanut butter, eggs, cinnamon and half of the oats and mix well. Slowly add the remaining oats incorporating them with the rest of the ingredients until you achieve a nice pliable mixture, which can be rolled out flat.

Using a rolling pin roll out the mixture until it is approximately 1cm thick. Use a cookie cutter of your desired shape and cut out some cookies.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely.

Stored in an airtight container they should be good enough to feed for a week.

3 Homemade Christmas Dog Treats

Christmas is all about spreading love, joy and indulgences. We have the festive roast with all its trimmings, Christmas pudding, Christmas cake and just about anything else we could desire but what about our pets? Christmas is another perfect time to show them our love and appreciation by creating some tasty homemade dog treats.

Just remember no sugars, especially chocolate or any other hazardous ingredients which can potentially bring more harm than joy. Yes, you can spoil your dog whilst at the same time being sure the food they have is both safe and tasty and still be free of additives and preservatives; but be smart about it.

Frozen peanut butter yoghurt treats

Despite being human food, peanut butter and yoghurt have become firm favourites with our pooches — and they’re safe for their tummies too. One really easy treat they’ll love is frozen peanut butter yoghurt treats.

Choose a yoghurt that’s free from artificial sweeteners or added sugars. Make sure your peanut butter is unsalted and free from artificial sweeteners too.

Melt one cup of peanut butter in the microwave and mix with 32 ounces of yoghurt. Pour the mixture into cupcake papers and place in the freezer. Once frozen, serve to your dog.

Grain-free dog treats

If you’re catering to a pooch that has a grain allergy, don’t worry — you can still create tasty snacks that won’t upset their stomach. To create these biscuits, you’ll need a cooked, cooled sweet potato, a quarter cup of coconut oil and two cups of quinoa flour.

Preheat your oven to 175°C. Combine the sweet potato and coconut oil in a bowl and mix well. Add the flour cup-by-cup to the bowl until the dough begins to stick together.

Flour your surface and roll out the dough until it’s about a quarter of an inch thick. Cut out the treats and bake for 20-25 minutes. Turn off the oven but leave the treats inside to cool for 45 minutes to an hour. Remove from oven and serve once fully cool.

Cheesy biscuits

Another doggy favourite is cheese — we’ve all seen those begging eyes as we tuck into a pizza! Keep their cravings at bay and make them their very own cheesy biscuits. They only take about 20 minutes to make, so are great if you’re looking for something quick and easy that’s still really tasty!

You’ll need 125g multipurpose flour, 25g of grated parmesan cheese and 25g of grated cheddar cheese, 1 egg and 350ml of evaporated milk.

Preheat your oven to 175°C. Mix all of the ingredients together and ensure they’re well blended. Grease a baking tray and place teaspoon-size balls on the tray, making sure to space them out. Bake for 10-12 minutes.

And if you aren’t the cooking type you can always treat your pooch with shop bought treats, but please remember what’s good for you isn’t necessary good for your dog, so please buy treats designed for dogs and don’t feed them humans leftovers, especially no cooked bones as they can be truly dangerous.

Lately we have been juicing a lot. All is good but after each session we are left with a lot of pulp and it seems like such a waste to simply pop it into the food bin and we are not naturally born gardeners. So this gave me an idea for “recycling” my carrot, apple or whatever pulp that comes out from my juicer. Adding it into the dog biscuits we were making was a no brainer as a first step… so next on the agenda is a human grade cake 🙂

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup carrot pulp
  • 1 cup unsalted smooth peanut butter
  • 1 cup organic wholemeal flour
  • 1 egg

Preheat the oven to 160C fan.

Prepare one large baking tray. If you wish, you can line it with some parchment but these cookies do not stick to the tray so that step can be easily skipped.

Pop all ingredients into a mixing bowl and using a silicone spatula mix it well.

After a short while everything will combine and form smooth, easy to play with dough.

Using your hands flatten out the dough in order to cut the desired shape of your finished cookie or if you prefer to do a proper job then use a rolling pin to make sure each cookie is super even in size. Our two dogs don’t care about looks so long as they keep coming, so we opt for the rustic method of rolling.

So I normally use just my hands (less washing up later on) and flatten it out till it is about 1.5cm thick.

While making this batch I’ve had to use a tall slim glass to cut my cookies. The batch ended up yielding 15 pieces.

Once all cookies are cut out or formed into their final shape then place on the baking tray and pop them into the oven and set a timer for 12 minutes (you might need to increase the time to 15 minutes it will all depend on how dry your carrot pulp was and of course your cooker). They should be slightly golden in colour but still a little soft to the touch when pressed.

Once ready remove from the oven and allow to cool for at least 15 minutes on the baking tray. After this time move them onto a cooling rack and allow to cool completely.

Both Lilly and Bunk really liked them so I hope your pooch will enjoy them too.

Dog Friendly Pork Jelly Cupcakes

From time to time we all deserve a treat, so do our pets, so why not create some super tasty and healthy pork jelly cupcakes for them to enjoy?

The recipe is a remake of my jellied pig trotters I cook for my dogs to help them with any potential joint problems. Jellied pigs trotters are rich in collagen and gelatine, which will help to maintain healthy bones and joints for longer. Normally they would have it for dinner but they love it so much that I’ve decided to turn it into a treat for the days when they eat chicken 🙂

If you have a small breed dog, maybe start with half of the ingredients below so your pooch has a chance to eat it all whilst it is still fresh. They will sit comfortably in the fridge for up to one week (just make sure they are placed in an airtight container).

Ingredients:

*if you don’t have or don’t want to buy any simply add some carrots, maybe a parsnip or an apple or some seaweed, just something with minerals and essential nutrients.

Method:

Pop trotters into a large cooking pot.

Fill it up with water, just enough to cover them, and then add additional 500ml of water.

Cook on a low heat for at least 12+ hours. The longer you cook them the easier it will be to remove all the bones. Minimum cooking time for it to turn into jelly is 3 hours. These days we normally cook a large batch once a week and leave it to simmer for 24h; after this time there it totally no problem with picking all bones out as they are simply at the bottom of the pot. Additionally the longer you let it cook the more goodness you will extract from the bones.

Once your cooking time is up, drain all the liquid into a clean pot or a large bowl.

Pick the bones out and BIN THEM.

Chop any remaining bits of trotter meat and skin into smaller chunks.

Now fill your silicone cupcakes moulds:  a little bit of meat, some fruit and veggie flakes and fill up with the liquid, which over time will turn into awesome jelly.

Once cooled, pop into the fridge and allow to set completely (overnight will be best).

Then just feed to your dog as needed.

Both Lilly and Bunk go mad for them so I really hope your pooch will love them too.

As a final thought if you’re sensitive to smells you may want to get some essential oils going in the house or stock up on Febreze as the cooking does give off a strong odour. I have become used to it now a days but like I said, if you are sensitive you may not enjoy the experience.

Chickpeas and Sardines Dog Treats

Super quick and easy to prepare, these doggie treats only use three ingredients yet they are very nutritious and super tasty (oh yes they are so good I’ve even tried them myself)… so I am absolutely sure your pooch will love them as well.

  • 250g roasted chickpeas
  • 240g sardines in oil
  • 2 eggs; lightly whisked

Method:

Prepare one large baking tray and preheat your oven to 180C fan.

If you don’t have roasted chickpeas you can simple roast tinned chickpeas in the oven. Just open the tin, drain and wash them a few times to get rid of any salt, then pat them dry with some kitchen towel. Spread them out evenly on a large baking tray. Add a small amount of olive oil and roll them around a bit in order to coat them evenly. Place the tray into the oven and set the temperature to 220C. Let the temperature rise from cold with the chickpeas inside, then keep them in and roast for a further 20-25 minutes once the temperature reaches 220C. Stir them every 6-8 minutes or so, so they can roast evenly. Once the time is up, turn the oven off but leave the chickpeas inside the oven for at least another 30 minutes. Finally remove from the oven and allow them to cool completely.

Whichever way you have prepared your roasted chickpeas now we need to place them into a food processor and pulse until they resemble flour with some coarse breadcrumb sized bits remaining (the idea is not to fully “grind” them into dust so the treats, once baked, can have some texture and crunchiness).

Then in a large bowl mix the grinded chickpeas, the sardines including their oil and the 2 whisked eggs.

Mix well until all ingredients are fully combined.

Remove from the bowl and place on a worktop.

Use a rolling pin or simply shape with your hands until the mixture is about 1cm thick. Cut into desired shapes and place them onto your prepared large baking tray.

The treats do not grow so you don’t have to worry about spacing them out, they also have enough oil so no sticking will occur 🙂

Bake in the earlier preheated oven for 15-18 minutes or until no longer soft to the touch.

Remove from the oven and move onto a cooling rack and allow to cool completely.

Store in an airtight container.
