Water – essential for good hydration; promotes weight loss and helps to flush out the toxins from our body.

Spinach – not only is it high in proteins and fibre but it is also loaded with microelements and vitamins like A, B6, C, E and K just to name a few.

Kiwi – with its low GI, high fibre content and alkaline properties kiwi is a perfect morning fruit, which adds tonnes of vitamin C, vitamin E and antioxidants into the mixture.

Matcha – super high in antioxidants helps to increase our energy levels, endurance and concentration but at the same time, promotes calmness and relaxation.

Wheatgrass – it contains chlorophyll, which is a natural liver cleanser and detoxifier; additionally it contains all minerals known to man, as well as many other vitamins.

Chia seeds – low calories, high in fibre and proteins, just what you need in the morning.

Protein powder – well this one is optional but if like me, you are struggling with food in the morning, I would highly suggest adding some into your smoothie to boost your protein intake, which will help with metabolism and keep you fuller for longer.

So let’s mix!

  • 250ml filtered water*
  • 1 large organic kiwi; peeled and halved
  • 1 scoop of diet whey protein powder**
  • 1 large handful of fresh organic spinach***
  • 1tsp organic chia seeds
  • 1/2tsp organic matcha
  • 1/2tsp organic wheatgrass

*as its winter time I don’t like my smoothie too cold in the morning so I don’t use chilled water, but come the warmer weather, you can use chilled water or reduce the amount of water and add a good handful of ice cubes on top

**I like strawberry flavour from PhD

***frozen would work great too

Method:

Well, you will need a blender, a high power one would be ideal.

Simply pop all the ingredients into the blender bowl, starting with water, pop the lid on and blend.

I start with variable 1, turn it to 10 and then swap too high for around 10 seconds or so. In this time frame, my Vitamix will have blended everything nicely, including the chia seeds and kiwi pips.

There is nothing better than a glass of freshly prepared smoothie to start your day. Fresh berries, ripe peaches, crisp apples plus a few more yummy ingredients can work wonders as a morning pick me up, especially if you add to it some “magic” ingredients.

My brother in law (almost) decided to treat us to one of his creations for a change… rummaging through the freezer in search of some frozen pure fruit juice ice cubes, which I’d just run out of evidently… he came across something else hiding in the bottom shelf… a Bountry ice-cream… well it was an unexpected choice but it worked so well. Since then we have replicated the smoothie many times and each time it offers the same wonderful experience.

When you think about it there isn’t really so much chocolate in it but its flavour comes through as a final note. First you get hit with the sharp berries mixed with a hint of coconut sweetness, then you should be able to taste the peaches followed by a distinctly chocolate finish… very complex and very unusual. I would really love to know your thoughts if you decide to try it.

Berry Morning Breakfast SmoothieI make it as a smoothie but if you wish you can always reduce the amount of coconut water or even skip it entirely and use it as your morning smoothie bowl… just add some cereal, nuts or top up with more whole fruits.

Anyways how to make this divine breakfast…

Ingredients:

  • 250g organic blackberries
  • 3 large ripe organic peaches
  • 1 large organic apple
  • Handful of organic raspberries
  • Handful of organic blueberries
  • 250ml organic chilled low fat blueberry yogurt
  • 150ml organic chilled coconut water
  • 1 Bounty ice-cream

Method:

Wash all fruit. De-stone peaches and pop everything into your blender. I personally do not peel or remove apple core but you can do it if you wish.

Add yogurt, coconut water and blend until semi-smooth.

Pop the lid open and add frozen Bounty ice-cream, shut the lid and blend until smooth.

Simple.

Serve and enjoy!

Triple Coloured Pure Fruit Smoothie

My Triple Coloured Pure Fruit SmoothieThis time I have for you a funky looking drink which should appeal to both kids and adults. All we have in the glasses are pure fruits, nothing else, nothing less… just fruit.

So what do we need?

Well, you will need some fruits, a blender, two empty 200ml glasses and a little bit of patience 🙂

Ingredients:

  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 200g strawberries
  • 2 ripe kiwi

Method:

Well, there isn’t a lot to it… you blend each type of fruit, one at the time and slowly add them into your glasses.

I started with bananas as they are the heaviest (I think), then the strawberries and finally kiwi on top.

The trick is to add your blended fruit into the glasses very slowly, otherwise the new fruit puree goes in the middle of the glass and all you can see from the outside is the bottom layer rising up… no funky looking layers at all.

So, just like I said before, be patient and take your time.

Second thing to remember is to wash or at least rinse your blender after each type of fruit, so there is no old colour or bits transferring into the new fruit layer.

I like to drink it without mixing it up. Using a straw I start with the sweet banana, going into fresh strawberries and finishing my drink on a slightly sourer note with the sharp kiwi. Mark, on the other hand prefers to stir it well and drink once all fruit flavours are well mixed.

I am going to experiment with some other fruits and maybe I can create an even better looking set of colourful layers.

I really wish I had a cold press juicer to play with but for this moment I only have a blender so I am a little bit restricted as to what I can do.

Fresh Strawberry Shake

Fresh Strawberry ShakeI love berries, especially strawberries. When I was a child my parents used to have a small field of them. I remember each year around mid-June spending hours out there helping them pick them up… hard back breaking work but it didn’t stop me loving them.

Anyhow, I find that now-a-days shop bought strawberries, or any other fruit for that matter, hardly ever tastes like the real deal, but better them than nothing, right?

One day, last month I was very lucky to return home from a bloggers meet-up with a brand new Philips blender in my bag thanks to Currys and Joe Blogs. Now, there is no stopping me. Most days I blend something in the hope of creating something special.

This strawberry drink is my latest invention and I really hope you will like it.

Ingredients:

  • 250ml vanilla yogurt
  • 250g fresh strawberries
  • 2tbsp ground almonds
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • 1tsp honey (optional)

Wash the strawberries and remove the green stalk.

Pop them into the blender and blend until smooth.

Add the yogurt, ground almonds and cinnamon and blend some more.

The final shake isn’t sweet, so if you prefer a sweet/er option, add a spoonful of honey and blend until smooth.

That’s it, you are all done.

Now drink and enjoy!

My Fresh Strawberry ShakeTop Tip: Ground almonds will add a bit more substance and tons of vitamin E into a drink but not a lot of flavour. If you prefer a stronger almond flavour and don’t want to use any artificial flavouring, you can use whole almonds and process them yourself. Take a good handful of whole, good quality almonds (the ones from Wonderful Almonds are perfect for this job), spread them on baking tray and roast them in an earlier preheated oven at 175C or 155C if fan assisted for about 5 minutes. Then remove them from the oven and stir well making sure that they are all turned over and pop back into the oven for 2-3 minutes… remove them and check if they are ready (there should be a wonderful powerful aroma filling your kitchen and they should be hot to the touch). If needed pop them back into the oven for another 2-3 minutes, after another invigorating stir. They shouldn’t take longer than 15 minutes to roast, normally it takes only 10. Ideally when finished you want your nuts to be shade or two darker than when you put them in the oven and the smell! The smell should be very nutty but be careful as you can’t let them get scorched and definitely not burnt. If you think that your nuts are ready remove them from the baking tray and cool in a different cool dish. You might think that this is a lot of messing around to roast some nuts and it is, but trust me it is worth it. Freshly roasted nuts have an amazing aroma and much more definite taste. Once cold pop them into food processor and pulse them until grounded. Don’t wiz to much or they will get hot and the oils will clog them together and you will end up with almond butter, so pulse and take your time, then finally add into your shake.

Peach & Banana Yogurt Shake

Lately we find ourselves with an abundance of natural yogurt in the house. We often use yogurt in cooking, especially the natural one but usually it is one spoon here and one spoon there… not a lot of recipes call for a 500ml tub of it or more… except for maybe a mild curry.

So I tried to bake a yogurt cake just a few days ago but it didn’t came out as I would expect or even hope… I suspected it was my fault for adding a blueberry yogurt instead of a natural one, my cake came out looking pretty weird and blueish. Once I have perfected my yogurt blueberry cake I will share it with you for sure.

So back to my yogurt dilemma… too much yogurt and not a lot to do with it… it was time to go back to basics and start mixing some shakes.

Today’s special was a Peach & Banana Yogurt Shake 🙂

Peach & Banana Yogurt ShakeIngredients:

  • 500ml of fat free natural yogurt
  • 100ml of double cream (or a single if preferred or just the milk if you are counting calories)
  • 2 large ripe bananas
  • 2 ripe peaches
  • 1tsp vanilla essence
  • Milk; enough to make the drink as runny as you like

Method:

Wash and peel your fruit, then chop them into smaller chunks.

Pop the chopped fruit into a blender, add all the remaining ingredients except the milk and wiz until smooth.

Add the milk slowly until you get just the right consistency you require, I tend to find the thickness of my drinking straws in the cupboard dictate just how runny my shake should be 😉

Pour into glasses and enjoy!

My Peach & Banana Yogurt ShakeThere is no added sugar, which means that if you skip adding the cream you can enjoy a delicious and totally guilt free shake, which will give you a nice refreshing energy boost.

I am thinking that tomorrow’s special shake will be a coffee based one. Happy me as I adore coffee flavour.
