Despite the fact that we didn’t move house lately, we seem to have an awfully large amount of boxes laying around the house, garage and loft… wherever you look there is boxes filled with some stuff. Living around so many boxes is very tiring and it comes the moment when enough is enough. It is time to de-clutter… again!
Last year we had some big de-cluttering action going on (you can read about it here and here), but that was last year and in the last 12 months we seem to have accumulated, yet again, a lot of stuff which have no permanent home. We now have to start again, from the beginning, in order to bring our house back to its full potential and show its full glory; especially that we are thinking about selling… no one will look with favouritism at the house full of clutter that resembles a warehouse.
So back to the basics and let the selection begin – a pile for selling, a pile for the local charity, a pile for the rubbish tip and finally a pile to keep.
I really wish I was more organized and didn’t allow all this clutter to accumulate like this.
I wish I could make snap decisions right there on the spot regarding what to do with any particular item when it first comes in to my possession, but I can’t… I like keeping it all just in case… and then I wonder… in case of what?
In case I might need it one day?
In case someone else might need it one day?
In case of what?
I am actually not able to answer this question but it doesn’t change my desire to keep it all.
The thought of moving house again really scares me. The last time when we moved it was from a rented property. We had very limited possession of our own then. This time around it will be a totally different story as we have a big 4 bedroom house that is filled with stuff… we are going to need a bigger truck… or two to move all of these things.
We are at this crossroads at this moment and aren’t sure which way to go… but I think more roads are leading towards selling up and moving than staying put where we are now.
Looking back at our moving experience last time, we decided this time round we are going to get movers. Ideally I would love for them to pack everything, move us and unpack each box while we are on holidays relaxing and chilling out. I doubt this will happen unless we win the Lotto but… one can always dream.
Do you have any tips in regards to keeping your house clutter free or moving?

I love a good declutter, I’m like Nichola I actually use moving as a chance to sort out and start again! x
I actually quite like packing and unpacking- I like the chance to declutter and sort things out and start again. It’s just so time consuming!
oh i know what you mean, i think with every property and if its bigger than previous one you tend to have more and more stuff
We are always de-cluttering our house. If we haven’t used something for 6 months and it doesn’t have sentimental value, then it gets thrown out.
I love a good de-cluttering session – so cathartic. But you can guarantee that eventually I’ll find a use for something I haven’t used in ten years and threw away last week. Doh!
We hoard. I’ve tried everything. If I haven’t used something in 6 months I throw it away. This seems to work
We 2 are serial box hoarders lol!! We recently moved house and upon clearing out the loft chucked away so many cardboard boxes it was ridiculous! They all got chucked into the loft incase we needed to return the item that came in them then they just got forgotten about lol!!

You fill me with dread. Our move will involve getting rid of what we have cluttered the place up with in 38 years!
I think you have to be ruthless. Get rid of anything you haven’t used in the past 12 months and only keep things you’re using or that you’re extremely emotionally attached to.
I love decluttering, it makes you feel so organised. Good luck with the move, I would be ruthless and put the items in 3 boxes – keep, charity, ebay.
We still have our boxes from 1998 as we bought the house (yay! they celebrated a new millennium with us). And we bought much things online so we saved the boxes in case of a return…. and they all are still here “just in case we need it”. The imagination to move with movers sounds tempting, but on the other hand, a move is a chance to sort out the things you don’t want/need no longer… and if you plan to find a new home, you could be my new neighbor, there is a cute ole pub for sale in my street :o)… just saying :o)
Oh wow, really? Mark would love it… I bet pub will have so much character and look awesome
but hey wait… don’t you speak French out there?
there are sa lot of expats from uk you will not really need it :o) even the seller is from uk :o)
This is good to know.
Any idea of the price? … for the pub place
around 80k euros, I think (but if you really plan to buy a house in france, there are much better places) since it is no longer attractive for expats, the prices are down.
Ideally we would love some small hotel or a B&B close to water and maybe some woods.
We didn’t consider France due to lingo problems we might have.
you can buy a hotel here too, but it’s more a howltel what needs a wrecking ball (witout Miley Cyrus lol) you can take a look for houses at boncoin.fr, there are a lot nice cribs…even a castle… hope I will win in the lottery tonight, than I will share the 40 rooms with you :o)
btw: you can learn it within 2:34 :
it really works :o)
