Turmeric, the spice of life, has countless benefits not only for humans but also for our canine friends. Offering a natural detox, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial aids it helps you keep the heart, liver and digestive system in good health as well as acting as a natural pain relief.

With Bunk getting older I worry about him developing arthritis and being in pain, so instead of waiting for the bad times, I decided to act now and take some preventative measures. I used to bake turmeric cookies for them as treats and only treats, so I’ve created this Turmeric Golden Paste, which is much richer in coconut comparing to other recipes out there, as a food additive. Both Lilly and Bunk totally don’t mind it being added to their food and every night their food bowl is licked clean.

Ingredients:

• 100g organic turmeric
• 400ml coconut milk
• 55g raw virgin organic cold presses coconut oil
• 2tsp fresh ground organic black pepper

About the ingredients: the turmeric has to be organic as you want to get as much curcumin as possible; the coconut oil has to be organic and cold pressed so it retains as much of its beneficial properties as possible and the fresh organic black pepper has to be organic and it has to be freshly ground; the pepper makes the turmeric much more potent so it is a very important addition.

Method:

Place the turmeric and coconut milk in a cooking pot over a low heat. Cook, stirring constantly, for about 8-10 minutes or until the paste is thick.

Remove from the heat and add freshly ground pepper.

Let it cool for about 5 minutes.

After this time add the coconut oil and stir until dissolved and fully incorporated.

Allow to cool completely.

Using a silicone spatula move your creation into an air-tight container and store in the fridge.

Feed daily but do not exceed the daily dosage, which is 1/4tsp per every 10lbs of body mass.

If you are new to turmeric and have never fed it to your dogs before, start slowly with a much lower dosage and let them get used to t. Most dogs do not mind the taste but it might cause some constipation if taken too much too soon. Also, as should be the case in any pet filled household, make sure that there is always plenty of fresh drinking water around for them.
