What’s Cooking – Something from Nothing Dinner

From time to time I take a look into the fridge or stock cupboard and there is nothing to eat… actually there is a lot of things to eat but they do not really go together in any order that would create some meal that would be suitable for a dinner like meal.

One day last week was just one of those days…

The fridge was kind of full of stuff but nothing really resembled a dinner without some missing ingredient I could think off. Inevitably my first thought was “a take away it is”, but as there isn’t really a nice take away around us, we decided to look harder and simply create something from nothing… in the end this is what we came up with…

What’s Cooking – Something from Nothing Dinner


  • Couscous
  • 1 small tin of garden peas
  • 1 small tin of sweet corn
  • 1 white onion
  • 1 red onion
  • 2 polish sausages (left from the night before)
  • spoonful of olive oil


Prepare couscous as per instruction on the pack but instead of water we added a nice chicken stock.

Chop sausage and onions and fry for a while, until onions are nicely coloured and the sausage is browned.

Drain the peas and sweetcorn and place in a serving bowl.

Add all other ingredients, mix well and serve.

It took us 10 minutes to do it. It was simple yet extremely tasty. Normally we would use a lot of “posh” ingredients to go with couscous like mozzarella cheese or sundried tomatoes but actually you can mix it with anything you like.

I am quite pleased we opted for such a “creative” option instead of a take away that evening, otherwise I would never have discovered that a few simple ingredients put together like this could create something so yummy.

I think from now on couscous will be joining my list of go to ingredients in cases of dinner emergencies.

  1. Ah, couscous is a quick meal miracle, isn’t it?! We do the slightly more traditional version, only because I’m a rubbish cook given to no innovation! I think you’ve done brilliantly not ordering but using ingenuity to cook up a lovely homecooked meal 🙂 x

  2. Cous cous is one of our favourites. This recipe sounds wonderful and right up our street. We enjoy it with just a bit of butter as a side to lamb tagine or with some lemon squeezed into it to go with sweet mango chicken. Yum!

  3. I do this sometimes too. There isn’t much take away here and sometimes I just feel too lazy to go to the market to get all that I need to really cook something. So I just put everything together and hope to get something good out of it. sometimes it’s suprisingly good.

  4. I have this problem sometimes too, there are many things in the fridge but they don’t go together :o) and then we create a meal from “nothing too” :o) we call it “shmick-shmack” and it sometimes is much tastier than a “real” meal :O)

    1. I tried “shmick-shmack” today in a attempt to “clean” the fridge – smoked chicken and a few days old bean soup… didn’t go well together as much as I would like… let’s hope tomorrow some “real” meal will appear on my plate 🙂
